Finland's journey from a close partner to NATO membership

The EU and NATO are two organisations created to maintain peace and security. Relations between NATO and the EU were institutionalised in the early 2000s, building on steps taken during the 1990s to promote greater European responsibility in defence matters. 

Despite being two different organisations with distinct origins, both organisations share similar strategic interests and face the same challenges today. With 21 out of the 27 EU member states currently in NATO, along with Finland and Sweden applying to join as well bringing up the total number to 23, it is only natural that the two organisations have close relations with each other.  But to what extent do both organisations help each other? And how has the invasion of Ukraine altered that relationship?
