About the Journal

The Greater European Journal (GEJ) is a policy-focused journal associated with the Institute for a Greater Europe (IGE). The GEJ serves as an outlet for policymakers and academics to present rigorous, timely, and novel contributions to the study of issues as they relate to Greater Europe. Open Access policy

 We at the Institute are committed to academic open access, permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of its articles and to use them for any other lawful purpose. All the articles published in this journal are free to access immediately from the date of publication. We do not charge any fees for any reader to download articles for their own scholarly use. This Journal is published under the Creative Commons License Attribution-Non Commercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0). This means you may share but cite and use accordingly for non-commercial means. Authors are allowed to retain copyright and publishing rights; the Institute asks for non-exclusive publishing rights and first publishing rights for articles submitted and accepted.    

What do we publish?

• Aims and scope
  • The Greater European Journal (GEJ) is the policy-focused peer-reviewed journal of the Institute for a Greater Europe (IGE). The journal serves as an outlet to present research, analysis, and review of the latest insights into European politics from a wider perspective, bringing the Neighbourhoods, Eurasian and Transatlantic affairs into the conversation, as well as critically analysing Europe’s place in the world. As an interdisciplinary journal, we invite submissions by students and early career researchers from a range of backgrounds such as European studies, Political Science, Law, International Relations, Sociology, Geography, History, as long as they relate to the Journal’s themes (Europe as a global actor, EU Neighbourhood and accession, European integration, Transatlantic relations, Global politics). The journal seeks to approach all topics through a process of academic rigour and achieve real-world impact. As such, we particularly value novel insights into relevant, contemporary issues.
• Article types
  • Research Article
    • Research articles should be 4,000 - 8,000 words in length, not including embedded references or bibliography. They are lengthier pieces which should involve the application of theory and/or empirical testing to a relevant policy issue or policy area. These articles can be interdisciplinary and should show how the conclusions can be applied to future understanding of politics, public policy, or international affairs as they relate to Greater Europe.
  • Policy Analysis
    • Policy analysis articles should be 2,000 - 4,000 words in length, not including embedded references or bibliography. They are expected to be similar to research articles in their structure and rigour, but will be briefer and narrower in focus. Policy analysis articles should focus only on one specific policy or one aspect of a policy. These articles should also provide a clear conclusion, or conclusions, for how policies have affected social, economic, or political outcomes, or for how a policy can be reformed to address pertinent issues.
  • Book Review
    • Book reviews should be between 1,000 and 2,000 words, not including embedded references or bibliography. The reviewed work must be a recent scholarly work, meaning it was published in the last three years. The book review must contain the publication and reviewer data above the main text.
  • Paper presentation
    •  Each submission should include the following:
      • A title
      • The name of the authors and their affiliation(s)
      • An abstract of up to 200 words
      • 3-6 keywords relating to the article
      • An introduction, main headings and subheadings for the body of the paper, and a conclusion
      • A reference list at the end citing all sources listed alphabetically
    • Written in British English and following our Style Guide
    • Harvard referencing style, please refer to the guide here
    • All illustrations (including photos, graphics, graphs, cartoons) should be in gif, png, jpg, or jpeg format.
      • Illustrations must also be submitted with evidence that they are free to use (e.g. it is from a copyright-free website, or the contributor has approval from its owner).

 

Editorial policies

•  Peer review
  • All articles submitted are subject to a double-anonymised peer-review process. Following the editing and review from our editorial team, articles are then anonymised and sent to expert peer reviewers along with a form, who then give their advice on the piece to the editorial team on the accompanied form with an overall categorisation of Accepted, Minor revision needed, Major revision needed, or Rejection. If not rejected, the authors are then sent the feedback, again anonymously, and told to make revisions. This process is repeated until the reviewer, authors, and editors are satisfied and the pieces are accepted by our Editor-in-Chief.
    
• Authorship
  • Each contributor who has made a substantive contribution to the article should be listed as an author. Principal authorship, order of authorship, and other publication credits should be based on the relative contributions of the individuals involved, regardless of status.
• Declaration of funding
  • All contributions made by outside sources to relevant research should be noted during submission.
• Declaration of conflict of interest 
  • Any conflict of interest among one or more contributors should be noted during submission.

Please email manuscripts to both journal@institutegreatereurope.com and outreach@institutegreatereurope.com, along with the name of author(s) and affiliation(s) in the body of the email. All manuscripts should be submitted without identifying information to comply with the double-blind peer review process.
