The impact of EU state-building and enlargement policies on democracy in the Western Balkans

Join the Institute for a Greater Europe for another event of the year revolving around the topic of the impact of EU state-building and enlargement policies on democracy in the Western Balkans. We have our very own IGE Democratisation Bureau Officer, Adrian Waters, who will be moderating the event! In this event, four experts will discuss the impact of the EU state-building and enlargement policies on the democratisation processes of the Western Balkan countries from different theoretical and national perspectives in order to provide a broad picture of the political and social situation in the region. Most importantly, it will be an opportunity to talk about the EU’s behaviour towards states within its sphere of influence and the lack of realistic enlargement prospects. 

We are delighted to host the following high level speakers at this event: - 

Professor Marie-Janine Calic of East and South East European History at the University of Munich. 

She worked and consulted for the Special Coordinator of the Stability Pact for Southeastern Europe in Brussels, UNPROFOR-Headquarters in Zagreb, and the ICTY in The Hague. -

 Dr. Biljana Vankovska, a Full Professor at the Institute for Security, Defence and Peace at the University “St. Cyril and Methodius” in Skopje, North Macedonia. 

She is also a member of the academic associations in the field of political science and international relations, such as ISA, IPSA, EuPRA, IPRA. - 

Florian Bieber (PhD, University of Vienna), a Professor of Southeast European History and Politics and Director of the Centre for Southeast European Studies at the University of Graz, Austria. He also currently holds the Jean Monnet Chair in the Europeanisation of Southeastern Europe. 

- Soeren Keil, the Academic Head of the International Research and Consulting Center at the Institute of Federalism, University of Fribourg in Switzerland. Mr. Keil has also authored and edited 10 books, of which the most recent ones include Power-sharing in Europe (co-edited with Allison McCulloch, 2021), and A New Eastern Question? Great Powers and the Post-Yugoslav States (co-edited with Bernhard Stahl, 2022).
