Virtual Museum of Peace or the Visualisation of an eternal dream for peace

“If you want peace, prepare for war” and old Roman saying emphasize. All over the world, you can find a plenitude of military museum, celebrating war and weapons, telling different interpretation of (hi)stories of war. Asking for a definition of war, seems to be an easy one. During the last year Europe had to learn this lesson the hard way. The European Dream of peace was appalled by the sad belligerent events taking place at its heart in Ukraine.
Nevertheless, any self-conscious representations of peace or peace-building on display, beyond some limited narratives of conflict resolution inherent in images of victory, is hard to find. Appealing to the famous call to “Imagine”, by John Lennon this event will divert the perspective from warfare, instead encouraging to think about own different visualisation of peace.
We are very delighted to have gained Dr. Alice König from the University of St. Andrews for this event. There she directs an interdisciplinary research project, “Visualising War and Peace”, which studies representations of conflict and its aftermath from antiquity to the 21st century conquest. Together with an interdisciplinary students group she has established the Virtual Museum of Peace. At this evening we will discuss about the imaginative power of various conceptions of peace. This includes a reflection upon the power of virtual museum for peace education, empowering everybody to foster peace-making and sustain peace-keeping.
